Treating dental anxiety for patients near Rainham

When it comes to visiting the dentist many of us have no problem with it, however for a number of people around the world a trip to the dentist can be one of the most daunting experiences they can think of. Like many of us suffer from phobias involving spiders, needles, birds and hospitals, many suffer from a problem known as dental phobia.

Dealing with dental phobia

There are a number of reasons why people suffer from dental phobia, which many would have developed due to a bad experience whilst visiting the dentist. However for many dental phobia can be a side effect of another problem such as anxiety, mood disorders and post-traumatic stress, amongst others. It has also been found that it can often stem from the lack of control a patient has whilst in the chair, rather than the pain they experience.

However there are now many treatments available for those who suffer from dental phobias in order to help them undergo dental treatments.

These treatments include general anaesthesia, where people with extreme dental phobia will be given an anaesthetic to put them asleep during treatment. However other options should be explored first.

These other options include sedation, where you can undergo oral sedation, which involves taking medicine to help relieve your anxiety or inhalation sedation, which is also known as ‘gas and air.’ Finally there’s intravenous sedation, where you will be injected through a tube into a vein on the back of your hand to help relieve your anxiety.

There’s also The Wand, which is a syringe system that delivers an anaesthetic at the perfect speed every time to reduce the chance of pain that many associate with injections. It achieves this perfect speed every time as it’s computer controlled by CompuDent hardware, while the wand holds the needle, to ensure the injection is delivered perfectly.

The treatment itself often involves only two visits, which is much more convenient for you. Although the number of pre-op visits does depend on the situation of your teeth and the type of results you want to achieve personally. Also after the procedures there is usually a follow up visit or two final adjustments to ensure the procedure will last for a very long time.

If you want to find out if a smile makeover is right for or you, or just want to learn more about the procedure, then contact Kent Smile Studio near Aylesford today to book a consultation and take the first step in getting a dazzling new smile.

Have A Relaxing Visit To The Dentist With The Help Of IV Sedation For Patients Near Rochester

For many people a trip to the dentist can be a terrifying experience due to dental phobia. At Kent Smile Studio the staff are highly qualified and understand the problems associated with dental phobia, and will discuss your procedures with you and what you can expect at every stage of treatment.

However dentists at Kent Smile Studio are aware that some treatments are a little more evasive than others and because of this some patients may feel a little more anxious than usual. Because of this Kent Smile Studio offer patients the option of Intravenous (IV) Sedation to help them through the process.

IV Sedation

The process of using the IV sedation is extremely straight forward for the patient. Firstly the IV Sedation Dentist will insert the IV; this is to help reduce your anxiety before your dental treatment starts. Once this is done you will immediately begin to feel relaxed and calm so your procedure can take place whilst you are at ease.

Aside from the IV sedation there are other alternatives available such as oral sedation and inhalation sedation for those who may have anxieties regarding needles or other forms of dental phobia. Oral Sedation is a tablet that is given prior to the dental procedure that relaxes you throughout your treatment. Inhalation Sedation is a gas that is inhaled before the procedure and has the same effects as other sedation processes.

Throughout any sedation process the dental staff at Kent Smile Studio will monitor you, as they understand that for some a trip to the dentist can be quite scary.

To find out more about IV and other forms of sedation contact Kent Smile Studio near Rochester today for a consultation.

Poor Oral Hygiene Could Lead To Bigger Health Problems For Patients Near Chatham

For a number of years now we have been hearing about the link between gum disease and heart disease and how poor oral hygiene could result in you suffering from a heart attack. It has been said that the poorer a person’s oral health situation then the more likely they are to suffer from other ailments. However it has also been stated that poor oral health good be a simple marker of someone’s overall health situation.

Scientists in 2010 said that a key reason for the increased risk of heart disease, due to poor oral health, could be bacteria entering the bloodstream through sore gums and depositing a clot forming protein. This was further backed up by a Scottish study that found people who failed to brush their teeth regularly had an increased risk of heart disease.

Link between oral health and heart problems

However in 2012 a number of scientists said that although there was a casual link between gum and heart disease there was no evidence to back up the claims. After reviewing 500 journal articles discussing the links between the two the panel of 13 said that, although people with gum disease may be at a higher risk of heart disease, the situation was probably coincidental.

Despite the debate over the two it is important to maintain a good oral hygiene routine to prevent the cause of gum disease, whether it is directly linked to heart disease or not. Therefore remember to brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss and implement the use of mouthwash in your daily hygiene routine to ensure you are taking every step in preventing gum disease.

If you have any worries concerning the wellbeing of your oral health, or simply feel you need a check up to see how you can improve it, make an appointment with Kent Smile Studio near Chatham today.

The Process Of A Dental Implant For Patients Near Rainham

You may have heard of a dental implant and they are used for, however you may not be entirely aware of what happens during the process of getting one. Therefore we have constructed a guide to prepare you for your dental implant treatment.

How does the treatment work?

Firstly, you will undergo your initial consultation where, after an initial discussion about alternative treatments an x-ray is usually taken in order to make an assessment of whether implants are right for you.

After this, you will undergo template preparation where models of your mouth and the specific areas within the mouth will be prepared. This will then be created into a template ready for the next stage.

If required the next stage of the implant process will be augmentation procedures. This is because if teeth have already been lost the jawbone can weaken; therefore if there is insufficient bone to hold the implants there are a number of procedures you can undergo to build new bone before the implants are placed.

If you do have sufficient bone however the next stage will involve the placement of the implants. This is the actual operation where the implant fixtures will be placed under the gum. These are placed in order to create a foundation for the implant as they act in the same way as the tooth root once did.

The next stage allows the top of the implant to be exposed and occurs three to six months after the last stage as it gives the implants time to bond with the bone structure. This requires a small operation before the gum is left to settle for two weeks, after this the implants can be used fully.

The restorative treatment is also carried out at the same time as the exposure and uses the implant to keep the replacement teeth in place. For more information on dental implants please contact the team at Kent Smile Studio near Rainham.

Flossing: Hints And Tips For Patients Near Aylesford

Do you floss? Well if you don’t or if you only do it sporadically then you should start flossing on a daily basis. There are many dentists out there who say that flossing is even more important than brushing when it comes to maintaining a good oral hygiene routine, in order to prevent gum disease and tooth loss.

However as an American study found in 2008 only 49% of Americans floss daily with 10% not flossing at all. We don’t know how true this is of the UK but one can only guess it’s pretty similar.

Dentists also hear many excuses about why people don’t floss such as; I don’t know how to floss, I’m not coordinated enough to floss and even food doesn’t get caught in my teeth.

Good oral hygiene

These excuses however don’t really cut it when it comes to maintaining a good level of oral hygiene as the reason for flossing isn’t just to remove left over pieces of food from your teeth. Flossing is integral for removing dental plaque from in between your teeth that can build up over prolonged periods of time, which if left can cause gum disease, gingivitis, tooth decay and tooth loss. Flossing is also the only effective way to remove this plaque from between the teeth.

For those of you who they don’t know how to floss it’s pretty simple, so here’s a quick guide:

  • Start with 12-18 inches of floss and wrap it so you have a few inches of rigid floss between both hands.
  • Then put the floss in the space between your teeth and gums as far as it will go.
  • Then move back and forth at least 10 times to ensure food and plaque has been removed.
  • Ensure this is done at least once a day.

Finally for those of you who claim you can’t use floss, use floss threaders instead. For more handy oral health hints make an appointment with one of our hygienists at Kent Smile Studio near Aylesford.

Patients Near Rochester Can Restore Their Smile And Teeth With A Crown Or Bridge

If you have problems with your teeth then there are plenty of things you can do to restore them to their former glory. One way to do this is through the use of a dental crown or bridge.

Dental crowns for damaged teeth

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap, which is then placed over the problem tooth or teeth. These are then cemented into place, totally encasing the part of the tooth that can be seen when you smile.

Crowns may be needed for a number of reasons, such as; protection if the tooth is weak or cracked, to help restore broken or worn down teeth, to give support to a tooth with a large filling and little tooth, to keep a dental bridge in place, or to cover dental implants, misshaped or discoloured teeth.

Aside from this there are also a variety of crowns for you to choose from at Kent Smile Studio near Rochester. The types of crowns available are, All Porcelain Crowns, which give a more natural look for the patient and are completely metal free, meaning the crown won’t appear grey making differentiating between crowns and teeth very difficult. Gold crowns are available for those who want a more precise fit, which they can offer because gold is a very workable metal, and it also eliminates the possibility of chipping and lasts much longer.

 Porcelain crowns

Finally there are porcelain crowns that have a metal substructure to give the crown strength, whilst the porcelain gives it a natural look. However due to the use of metal, it may become visible and also give the crown a grey appearance.

Finally dental bridges are available to help replace missing as they literally bridge the gap and are bonded to your other teeth for support.

Get CEREC Treatment At Kent Smile Studio Near Gillingham

Over the last few years there have been a number of major advancements in dental technology and at Kent Smile Studio we offer our clients a vast range of the very latest technology, which includes the CEREC system.

This is a revolutionary system that helps us create and fit custom made restorations on the same day you visit. In the past patients would have to wait up to two weeks for their new restorations to be made, as moulds and impressions of the patient’s teeth would be made, which would then need to be sent away so the restoration could be created in laboratory somewhere. But now the CEREC system allows us to do all of this on site, eliminating any waiting on your part.

How CEREC works

This new system works by taking digital images of your teeth and turning them into 3D models. After the dentist has prepared you teeth, instead of creating moulds with dental putty, photographs will be taken of your teeth using a special camera.

Then once you and your dentist are satisfied with the design of the new tooth, it will be sent off and turned into a new restoration. This usually takes a maximum of 30 minutes, but once it’s made it can be securely fitted on site.

This new technology creates restorations from ceramic blocks, which are available in different shades to ensure it matches the colour of your other teeth, which your dentist will help with. CEREC technology can also be used to create veneers, inlays, onlays and crowns.

CEREC technology also comes with a number of benefits such as speed, comfort, and convenience and there’s no need for temporary restorations. So to find out if this is suitable for you, or if you want to find out more contact Kent Smile Studio near Gillingham today.
